James is currently an Assistant Professor of Writing at Curry College. From 2018 until Spring 2026, he was faculty member at Canisius University where he was voted the Honors College Professor of the Year for 2024 and received the Thomas O'Malley Adjunct Award in 2026.

In April 2021, James defended a dissertation that examines poetic and dramatic portrayals of women's physicality in early modern England and representations of domestic abuse as economic disruption.
